EU Settlement Scheme Guide

The EU Settlement Scheme was established to safeguard the rights of EU citizens and their families to reside, pursue work opportunities, and continue their education within the UK, including those who may benefit from a Post-Study Work visa. The scheme grants either settled or pre-settled status, depending on the length of residence in the UK.

Eligibility for the EU Settlement Scheme

The deadline for most people to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme was 30 June 2021.

You can still apply if either:

  • the deadline for you to apply is after 30 June 2021
  • You have ‘reasonable grounds’ for why you’re applying now, and not by the deadline or in the time since the deadline passed

Who has a later deadline to apply

You have a different deadline if you’re eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme for one of the following reasons.

Eligibility Criteria
Deadline to Apply
Family member of someone from the EU, etc., living in the UK by 31 Dec 2020, joined after 1 Apr 2021, not a visitor
90 days from arrival or when permission expires, whichever is later
A family member of someone from the EU, etc., living in the UK by 31 Dec 2020, joined after 1 Apr 2021, entered as a visitor
90 days from arrival
Applying for a child born or adopted in the UK on or after 1 Apr 2021
90 days from birth or adoption
Family member of an eligible person of Northern Ireland, from outside the EU, etc.
90 days from arrival
Exempt from immigration control or stopped being exempt after 30 Jun 2021
No deadline if exempt; 90 days after exemption ends
Living in the UK by 31 Dec 2020, with limited leave expiring after 30 Jun 2021
Before leave expires

If you did not apply by the deadline

You can still apply if you’re eligible and can show ‘reasonable grounds’ for why you could not apply by the deadline or in the time since the deadline passed.

To be eligible for the EU Settlement Scheme, you must be:

  • An EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, and you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020
  • A family member of an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen who started living in the UK by 31 December 2020 and has settled or pre-settled status
