The move to eVisas is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize the UK’s border and immigration system, making it safer and more efficient. Tom Pursglove MP, Minister for Legal Migration and the Border, emphasized that this change will significantly strengthen border security, reduce the risk of fraud and abuse of documents, and ultimately provide cost savings for UK taxpayers.
From today, BRP holders will receive emails inviting them to set up a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, enabling them to access their eVisa, a digital proof of immigration status. The invitation process will continue in phases, expanding to all BRP holders during the summer of 2024.
The transition to eVisas also aligns the UK with international trends, as many countries have already moved towards digital immigration systems. Current holders of eVisas do not need to take additional steps, but should keep their UKVI account updated with any changes to personal information.
As part of the transition, physical immigration documents, including BRPs and biometric residence cards (BRCs), will gradually be phased out, with most expected to expire by the end of 2024. Until then, travelers are advised to carry their valid physical documents when crossing borders.
This eVisa rollout is part of a broader system overhaul that includes the recently launched Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, designed to provide further security and screening of travelers who do not require a visa to enter the UK.

Since April 17, 2024, the UK Home Office has been rolling out eVisas, inviting millions of individuals with biometric residence permits (BRPs) to transition from physical immigration documents to a digital format.
This initiative aims to replace all physical immigration documents with eVisas by 2025, enhancing border security and streamlining the verification process. Unlike physical documents, eVisas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with and can be seamlessly updated with new information, such as passport details.
